Recently the morning’s devotional by Dr. Billy Graham brought up an oft asked question: “If God already knows our needs, why pray?” Dr. Graham went on with the comparison to parents and their children and how we, as parents, want our children to come to us with their requests. We love them and delight in listening even when we sometimes say no, knowing what’s best for them.

I was reminded how I spent time talking, singing, laughing, and telling stories with my children. Many times it would be while driving them to school in the morning or picking them up on the days I was not working. Other times it would be more. I often explained to them they should never be afraid to talk to me about anything, that I would be there for them no matter what.

It was at that moment the light came on for me. My Father in Heaven wants this of me just as I did of my children. In this moment of grace, I felt drawn closer to Him.

Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

Hebrews 4:16

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
